West Australian farmer wins medal for combating soil erosion and salinity - Cathy Parker
A Western Australian farmer who pioneered the use of 'alley' farming has won the 2001 McKell Medal, for excellence in natural resource management. At the award ceremony in Adelaide last night, Garry English was praised for rehabilitation works on his Esperance farm, where he's using trees to control erosion and salinity. Mr English says he's going beyond his original aim of sustainable farming, to look at some of the world's 'big picture' issues, like greenhouse gases and he'd like to encourage other farmers to do the same, or suffer the consequences. "It's a quantum leap to go from just being an ordinary cockie out in the back blocks to going into the big order stuff," Mr English said. "I think there will be a huge challenge actually to get everyone on board, because we almost need everyone on board otherwise we have got a catastrophe coming and I don't want to be doom and gloom, but we are not doing things well," he said.

National Land and Water Audit reveals soil erosion and acidity are major problems facing the community - Julie Doyle
A comprehensive assessment of agriculture across the country has revealed soil erosion and acidity are major challenges facing farmers and the wider community. It's the first assessment of its kind, conducted as part of the National Land and Water Resources Audit and launched by Federal Agriculture Minister, Warren Truss in Canberra today. Head of the audit team Colin Creighton says soil erosion is a major issue that causes problems on farm as well as in our waterways. But he says there are measures farmers can take. "On farm with soil erosion, in grazing areas it's about pasture management, it's about crash grazing and a whole range of other systems that groups like Meat and Livestock Australia have been working with groups for some time to implement," Mr Creighton said. "In sugar cane, it's about green cane harvesting, grassed waterways and so on, the sort of thing that Canegrowers and the Sugar Research and Development Corporation have been working with cane farmers for a while. "So it goes on across the various industries, it's about practice, it's about continuous improvement in practice," he said.
